Last night’s MLB opener was bittersweet as the Phillies lost, but Atlanta’s Derek Lowe pitched 8 scoreless innings of 2 hit baseball.
While I love seeing the Phillies lose I was super soaker pissed to see Lowe pitch this well especially against the Phillies. The Mets shelled out a 36 million 3 year contract for Oliver Perez (12 mil a year) while the Braves shelled out a 60 million 4 year contract for Derek Lowe (15 mil a year). I think for 3 mil more a year I’d rather have Derek Lowe. Perez was erratic in the WBC for Mexico as well as in Spring Training for the Mets. I was listening to the Shnooze on the FAN last week and he said it best…”You might as well flip a coin whenever Oliver Perez is on the mound”. Basically with Ollie you have no consistency… He’s either the most dominant guy on the field or a boofest for the fans. I’m hoping Dan Warthen can change this somehow, but my gut feeling is that we’ve got the same ol’ Ollie eyebrows this season…. Maybe he just needs to shave those catepillar brows to gain some consistency. Either way we’ll see later this week what kind of Perez shows up to play.
